SIEMENS AG, ELEKTRONIKWERK AMBERG

WITH TRANSPARENCY TO THE ZERO-DEFECT PRINCIPLE

SIEMENS sets a new industrie 4.0 standard with its Amberg electronics plant. Hardly any other plant relies so consistently on comprehensive networking and automation of its production processes as the manufacturer of programmable logic controllers. They form the basis for a unique quality management system with an ambitious goal: zero-defect production.

If something does not go according to plan at the Amberg site, the production managers on site

usually notice it long before the consequences in the form of standstills or defective products actually become visible. This is because all product, process and quality data for up to sixteen million Simatic products manufactured annually at the site are available at all times in real time via a central quality management system. This not only enables shop-floor employees to react more quickly to deviations in the process. This also facilitates the continuous improvement of processes in the plant and of suppliers.

DEEPER PROCESS UNDERSTANDING THANKS TO KI

At the same time, the data obtained in this way form the basis for the use of prediction models, with which process deviations are not only identified and reported earlier, but which also independently suggest measures to the employee to solve the problem. With them, testing and downtime can already be reduced by 40% today. In the future, AI-based systems, such as automatic pattern recognition, will also help to better understand processes and thus enable a further step towards “zero-defect production”.

TARGETED INDUSTRIE 4.0 DEPLOYMENT FOR MORE PRODUCTIVITY

In addition, SIEMENS focuses on industry 4.0 elements such as the digital twin for product and production, collaborative lightweight robots, flexible FTS, 3D printing and the IoT MindSphere platform. Thanks to the continuous further development of its own production system, the location has been able to increase its production volume thirteenfold since it was founded in 1991, while maintaining the same production area and hardly changing the number of employees.
